Dye extraction over time
Is there a difference in the dye extracted with more time or more heat?
We compared a solar dye test and stove top repeat heat extraction.
Our colleague, Annette Nykiel joined us in this work.
We prepared samples of cotton, linen and silk, plus a collection of yarns including wool.
These were bagged in small net bags and labelled.
Solar dyeing
Jars were prepared with 400 g of leaves and filled with water. 4 sample bags were added to each jar.
Jars were exposed to the sun for the duration of the testing.
Samples were taken out, rinsed and dried at intervals.

Jars were simmered for 1 hour and left for 24 hours.
One sample was taken out, rinsed and dried.
This process was repeated until all 4 samples had been treated.
